The overnight stay at the Te Tahawai Marae was a fantastic cultural experience for the New Zealand Radio Training School students and tutors alike.
The marae is set in the grounds of Edgewater College, Pakuranga, Auckland, and is a “pan-tribal urban marae where people of all cultures may come to experience and learn about maori culture and customs”, as described on the marae’s official website.
For many students it was their first real chance to engage and embrace Māori culture. The experience also strengthened the bond between everyone involved.
The sense of family and teamwork that came from the preparation and sharing a Māori hāngi was a rewarding experience that was enjoyed by all.
