An 11-year-old boy has crashed his parents’ car into a truck after a police pursuit in Pukekohe, south of Auckland.
Police had just started to follow the car when he sped towards the roundabout on the corner of Queen St and Ward St, hitting a truck just before 12pm on Tuesday.
The boy, his two passengers and the truck driver all escaped serious injury.
Scaffolding equipment from the back of the truck was scattered across the intersection while the front of the silver Mazda Premacy that the boy was driving was shattered.
Sergeant Noel Foster said they were still in the early stages of their investigation but confirmed police had been pursing the car.
“The 11-year-old driver had taken his parents’ vehicle,” he said.
“Police were looking for some guys who had done a burglary in Tuakau, the 11-year-old saw the police… and he panicked.
“Police were a long way behind but they were trying to catch up to the car.”
The boy and his passengers were taken to the Pukekohe police station for questioning.
