The debate around whether the Maori language should be made compulsory in schools rages on.
Te Reo is mostly an optional subject to students in New Zealand schools.
Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says “Te Reo Maori should be compulsory in New Zealand schools”, and that being bi-lingual would be “a real added advantage” to young Kiwis. She believes “we need to make much more of an effort than we currently do”.
Student journalist Georgia Dunstan-Brown took to the streets of Auckland to ask the question: “Should Te reo Maori be compulsory in New Zealand schools?”
