Investigations are underway after videos of South Auckland students fighting were shared on Facebook.
Police spotted around 40 to 50 young people gathered at a car park on Browns Road in Manurewa. Some of the girls in that group were fighting, which officers managed to break up. Multiple videos were taken by students and were posted online. No one involved was seriously injured.
The fight is believed to have been organised using Facebook.
Police say there is a growing trend of young people, some as young as ten, across the country, using social media to meet up online and carry out all sorts of crimes; such as stealing cars, carrying out ram raids and aggravated robberies. And that this kind of behaviour is a community problem.
Counties Manukau Central Area Commander Julia Lynch says: “We know it is not always easy, but there are a number of agencies you can turn to if you need assistance with young people including, Salvation Army, Youthline, Iosis, the Soloman Group or Strive.”
One of the females involved has been referred to Youth Aid. Enquiries are ongoing.
