Boxing: The Beat Down You’ll Love

With the summer months fast approaching, people are getting ready to shed extra kilos so they can look their best.

Boxing is a great place to start if you’re looking for that edge to help you achieve your fitness goals. It is a great cardiovascular workout as well as an overall body workout.

Boxing used to play a more prominent role in my life a few years ago. Boxing was the sport that I chose to help me get out of my weight funk and finally do something about preparing my body for the better.

The sport helped me focus and made me feel confident. It also pushed me to my limits and allowed me to become mentally stronger.

I learnt so much from this one sport that has always helped me get through stuff that I was facing in life.

While boxing, endorphins race through my body like, and I feel like the ‘energiser bunny’; my morale is boosted when life is challenging.

Nikki Harris, Health and Fitness expert agrees with these statements.

“It boosts the confidence of anyone who gets involved. I have housewives in my classes who have never done this type of sport before,” she says.

The different aspects of boxing teach you a little about your limits. It allows you to focus on your goals and what you want to achieve.

“It makes me feel good that these women start to regain some control over their lives and do something for themselves,” says Nikki.

Boxing has taught me how to deal with my problems head-on. On those days when I was frustrated and angry over daily struggles, I could let it all out on a bag or the pads of the person I was teamed with.

There were always days when I didn’t feel like going to a class. I’d remember why I was going in the first place and how these classes made me feel. I felt empowered and energised.

Nikki says: “Their confidence and presence is heightened and that makes me feel proud to know that I have helped them in some way.”

I’m about to embark on another journey of self-discovery and find my passion for life again. I’ve chosen to incorporate this sport as part of my fitness goals and hope to achieve the confidence I once had years ago. Commitment and determination will see me through to success.

You can find classes anywhere in New Zealand, with local gyms catering for beginners to advanced. Boxing gyms are plentiful in the CBD district.

If you’re into a more personal journey, there are lots of corporate boxing fights that you can train for which will you give that personal drive to succeed.

Nikki runs a boxing class at Fitness Plus in Manukau at 9:30 am on Saturdays. She also runs a Boxing Bootcamp as part of True Women’s Fitness and Well Being in Manukau.
