British singer-songwriter Sam Smith has shared close-up pictures of his four new tattoos via his Instagram account.
Smith revealed he had met an “incredible” tattoo artist, alongside a photo of a sketchbook with two of the written designs he had inked on his body.
“So honoured and overwhelmed to not only have met this incredible artist, but to have her tattoo four bits of work on my body today. I adore you – such an inspiring human,” he shared.
Smith’s tight shots make it clear that the designs are unique. He provided details on what inspired him to take a trip to the parlour and showed a sentimental side for each piece.
The Stay With Me singer wrote: “First one – the equality sign on my wedding finger… This one’s pretty self-explanatory. It shows my views on gay marriage and equality for all x.”
Smith has been open about growing up gay and being bullied. He came out to fans while appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres show in early 2014.
The second is a little less romantic. Another set of double lines is inked on a finger on his right hand. Smith explained the tattoo is “inspired by one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found buried alone in the ice.”
Smith took a more direct route with his arm ink, where the word honesty is printed in soft, flowing writing. “Third – This is what I promise to be in my music,” he wrote of the design reading, “Honesty.” “It’s what I live by. In the words of @mariamena_official ‘Honesty is my God.'”
Next to a picture of the fourth and final tattoo, Smith admitted he was feeling “melancholy” when deciding on this piece of art. Some may think it’s a bit gloomy to have the word ‘alone’ tattooed onto your left arm forever, but he insisted it’s positive.
“And lastly – this is just me being a melancholy twat haha,” joked the star. “I do see it as a small positive thou… No longer lonely… Just alone… Which is ok x thought I’d share these with you because I love them.”
The soulful singer isn’t a stranger to an inked needle. Earlier this year, he had the tattoo of a small anchor put on his forearm. The symbol is a tribute to his fans, whom he affectionately calls “little sailors.”
Smith wowed Auckland back in April this year at a vector show, with fans saying it was the best concert they had ever been to. Sam told the crowd how much he had loved his time in New Zealand, including his trip to the Hobbiton movie set in Waikato.
