If you love nature and want a peaceful atmosphere, Turangi is the best place to visit. Just a 25 minutes drive, southwest from Taupo, Turangi is a small town situated on the North Island’s volcanic plateau of New Zealand.
Turangi is situated alongside the Tongariro river on state highway1, which provides ample opportunity for the keen angler. The river is famous for its rainbow trout and the Red Hut Bridge, where you can get a clear view of the Tongariro River.
Turangi has a small town center with a small population, but there is still plenty to do. You can go for a peaceful walk on the Tongariro river trail, fishing, and stay at the caravan parks facing Lake Taupo.
You can also visit Whakapapa Ski area at Mount Ruapehu, which is a southern skifield in the North Island, approximately 40minutes from Turangi.
I stayed at the Kaimanawa lodge which is a holiday rental property. My unit was a cute 1-bedroom lodge with a full kitchen and a lounge. The resort itself is a huge private property with mini villas and other facilities like a swimming pool and spa, games room and a guest lounge. They provide you with bicycles which you can ride around the town. This resort is just 2 minutes from the main town center.
I would recommend visiting during Autumn (June-July) when I visited. Turangi Tavern is a famous pub and restaurant where locals gather, otherwise, there are only a few shops. There are plenty of motels and lodges. Taupo is the nearest town where you can find lots of shops and restaurants.
So, if you want picturesque sights, where you can enjoy the breezy weather with your family, then definitely visit Turangi.
