If you love Malaysian food, and you’re on a budget, this hidden gem in Central Auckland could be the one for you.

The service at Pappa Rich is fast, and the quantity of food you get for the price represents great value.

When I visited the mains I tried were biryani served with eggplant, prawn sambal and fried chicken. Biryani is a flavoured rice cooked in spices and herbs, it was served with eggplant and prawn sambal which is a hot Malaysian sauce cooked with chili, ginger, garlic, peppers, and shrimp paste. I did not find it very spicy like the original ones you get in Malaysia, I think they have made it less spicy for the Kiwi palette so that everyone can enjoy the food.

The other dish was roti chanai with chicken curry, which is a layered flat bread served with traditional coconut base chicken curry, not very spicy but the coconut gave a nice sweetness to it. The curry was so delicious I ended up ordering it with jasmine rice as well.

For dessert I tried sago pudding in coconut milk, which wasn’t great, it was a warm sticky pudding made with tiny sago balls which were bland in taste, but the coconut cream was nice and thick and gave a sweet taste to it. The mint leaf kind of spoilt the taste giving an overpowering minty flavour in between.

Pappa Rich have a wide variety of drinks to choose from, the drink which I ordered was quite unusual, it was a chilled soy milk topped with sesame seed ice cream. The food portions are sufficient for one person per plate.

The dish that stood out for me was roti chanai both in taste and quantity wise.
